Efficient computation of extended images by wavefield-based migration

چکیده
Extended common-image-point (CIP) gathers can be constructed using wave-equation migration by preserving into the output image the non-zero spaceand timelags of the cross-correlation between the source and receiver wavefields. Correct wavefield reconstruction leads to focused events in the extended CIPs, while incorrect reconstruction leads to de-focused events that can be used for velocity model building. This approach limits the number of locations where the multi-lag crosscorrelation needs to be computed, thus reducing the computational cost of this method while preserving its capacity to indicate velocity errors. The cheaper cost is particularly important for wave-equation migration with wide-azimuth acquisition.

Extended imaging conditions for wave-equation migration
Wavefield-based migration velocity analysis using the semblance principle requires computation of images in an extended space in which we can evaluate the imaging consistency as a function of overlapping experiments. Usual industry practice is to assemble those seismic images in common-image-gathers (CIG) which represent reflectivity as a function depth and extensions, e.g. reflection angles. W...

Image-domain wavefield tomography (WT) exploits focusing characteristics of extended images for updating the velocity field. To make good use of this information, one must understand how such images behave if the migration velocity is accurate. This is not trivial because focusing depends on not only the model error, but also on the acquisition setup, the data bandwidth, and illumination variat...

Wavefield migration and tomography are well-developed under the acoustic assumption; however, multicomponent recorded seismic data include shear waves (S-modes) in addition to the compressional waves (P-modes). Constructing multicomponent wavefields and considering multiparameter model properties make it possible to utilize information provided by various wave modes, and this information allows...

Reverse-time migration can accurately image complex geologic structures in anisotropic media. Extended images at selected locations in the earth, i.e. at commonimage-point gathers (CIPs), carry enough information to characterize the angle-dependent illumination and to provide measurements for migration velocity analysis. Furthermore, inaccurate anisotropy leaves a distinctive signature in CIPs,...
